Property Description
Located 40 kilometres from the city of Moose Jaw, Buffalo Pound is dominated by native grasslands, the most endangered ecosystem in the world. Secured in March 2020 by the Nature Conservancy of Canada with the support of MapleCross Fund, the Buffalo Pound project protects 866 hectares of vitally important habitat, including approximately seven kilometres of shoreline along Buffalo Pound Lake, native grasslands through the Qu’Appelle River valley and perennial cover above the valley. The project helps create a large block of protected habitat within a corridor extending west to east across southern Saskatchewan that is essential to the movement of species across the landscape, both now and into the future. This corridor is also essential for building landscape resilience to the impacts of climate change in an area of the province with little natural habitat remaining. These lands filter nutrients and prevent agricultural runoff from entering Buffalo Pound Lake, improving or maintaining drinking water for 25% of the population of Saskatchewan.
This spectacular property provides essential habitat for numerous at-risk species including Sprague’s pipit, bobolink, Baird’s sparrow, American badger and northern leopard frog.
