Property Description

Whitefish Nature Reserve is an 81-hectare landscape of forest, wetland, meadow, and open rock near Jones Falls, cared for by the Rideau Waterway Land Trust. Set within the rugged beauty of the Frontenac Arch, the land rises and dips over ancient granite and gneiss bedrock, creating rolling ridges, rocky lookouts, and quiet lowlands that give the reserve its distinctive character.

From the crest of a windswept oak–pine rock barren overlooking a small lake, to the expansive organic meadow marsh that floods with spring meltwater, Whitefish is a landscape of transitions. Between the ridges are cool, shaded forests where Sugar Maple and Red Maple grow tall. On the higher, drier ground, White Oak and White Pine take root in cracks in the stone. The open barrens are dotted with lichens, mosses, blueberries, and huckleberries, while the mixed woods below shelter ferns, wildflowers, and sedges.

Water gathers in many forms here. A small interior lake drains toward Whitefish Lake, and several wetlands— including buttonbush and winterberry thickets—help filter runoff and reduce flooding. Vernal pools and seasonally saturated depressions provide critical amphibian breeding habitat, free from fish predation. Together, these wetlands, meadow edges, and forest openings create rich habitat for pollinators and birds, and support species at risk such as the Gray Ratsnake, Blanding’s Turtle, Eastern Whip-poor-will, Monarch, and Yellow-banded Bumble Bee, along with a healthy stand of black ash.

Though parts of the property were once farmed—old stone silos and foundations can still be found—the forest and meadow have reclaimed the land. Today, Whitefish Nature Reserve is not only a thriving natural area but also a welcoming community space. A 3-kilometre trail system invites visitors to walk, reflect, and connect with the landscape in every season.
