Nature Conservancy Canada – 2022
234 hectares
Property Description
With MapleCross Fund’s support, the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) has doubled the size of the Salmonier Nature Reserve. This protected area is located just an hour’s drive south of St. John’s. The newly added property is located on the southeastern side of St. Mary’s Bay is near the mouth of the Salmonier River and Avalon Wilderness Reserve, habitat that supports iconic woodland caribou.
The Salmonier River is known by locals and visitors alike for its large runs of wild Atlantic salmon. By conserving the land along its riverbanks and uplands, we can protect the health of the river system so it can continue doing what it does well: providing habitat for local wildlife as well as hosting anglers from around the world. The reserve’s undulating, rugged landscape features a healthy forest comprised of balsam fir, black spruce and the easternmost population of yellow birch in North America. A variety of wildlife, such as peregrine falcon, short-eared owl and red fox, and species at risk, like red crossbill and olive-sided flycatcher, thrive here.
