Property Description
The Quennell Lake conservation project is located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, 15 km south of the City of Nanaimo and within the Stz’uminus, Snuneymuxw, and Snaw-naw-as Coast Salish First Nations traditional territory.
Locally known as Yellow Point, Quennell Lake– MapleCross Forest is a significant project broken into three distinct phases totaling 113 hectares combined, of at-risk habitat and species. With the help of MapleCross, The Nature Trust of BC was able to complete and secure all three phases over two years, protecting Coastal Douglas-fir forest with ecological communities and species that are important globally and are at risk of being lost forever.
Quennell Lake is home to a wide range of wildlife and is a well-known local hotspot for birders. An area of regional and continental significance for waterfowl, over 165 species of birds have been recorded throughout the year.
The moist maritime Coastal Douglas-fir forest zone is of significant conservation concern in BC. This is one of the smallest, and rarest forest zones in B.C. with only 11.5% protected in parks or conservation lands.
