Nechako River (Phase I)

Prince George, BC

British Columbia Parks Foundation – 2024

64 hectares

Property Description

The Nechako conservation area is a newly protected property in British Columbia’s Fraser Basin, located west of Prince George. Situated within the traditional territories of the Saik’uz and Lheidli T’enneh First Nations, this property enhances conservation efforts along the Nechako River, where it meets the Stuart River.

The property is a beautiful stretch of forested land that slopes gently toward the Nechako River. It features rolling hills, small ravines, and rocky outcrops along the riverbanks, creating a rich and varied landscape for diverse ecosystems and wildlife. Several small streams weave through the land before joining the Nechako River, adding to the area’s natural biodiversity and beauty.

This conservation area is adjacent to the 20,000-hectare Stuart River Provincial Park, reinforcing an essential wildlife corridor for species such as deer and elk as they migrate between summer and winter ranges. The Nechako River itself is a vital waterway, home to 20 fish species, including important Chinook and Sockeye salmon runs, as well as the Endangered White Sturgeon. Additionally, the area holds historical records of the Gypsy Cuckoo Bumble Bee, a species listed as Endangered in Canada since 2014.

Thanks to the generosity and vision of conservation supporters, this special place will remain wild and thriving. The Nechako River will continue to flow freely past its forested banks, sheltering wildlife and connecting ecosystems. This is a win for nature and future generations who will experience the beauty and life that this land sustains.
