Property Description

Thanks to MapleCross Fund, a 200-hectare-property in Saint-André-d’Argenteuil has been forever protected by the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) from an imminent residential development project. With its unique Black Maple and Rock Elm forest stands, as well as 1.5 km of natural shoreline along the Rivière du Nord, the property is a jewel of biodiversity. The land’s numerous and diverse wetlands are also home to the Snapping Turtle, the Eastern Map Turtle, several amphibians such as Wood Frog and Spring Peeper, as well as to an impressive diversity of birds and waterfowl. So far, ecological assessments carried out on site by NCC’s biologists have shown the presence of more than a dozen different plant species at risk. It seems like the closer scientists look, the more marvels they discover!

The transaction being now completed, the NCC is undertaking a tree plantation project on the site of a former orchard now invaded by exotic plant species. Other activities will include site clean-up and installation of signage on the property limits and accesses. NCC has started discussing with the municipality on Saint-André-d’Argenteuil, members of the local community and other users in order to establish a management plan. Public access will be possible once adequate infrastructure is in place. NCC hopes to connect the land’s trails with the neighboring park in order to raise awareness about the richness of the region’s ecosystems.
