Aird Creek MapleCross Nature Reserve
North Frontenac, ON
Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust– 2025
81 hectares
Property Description
The MapleCross Newlands Nature – MapleCross Newlands & Aird Creek MapleCross Reserve is a 125-hectare property of exceptional ecological value in the Madawaska Highlands of Frontenac County. With its mature forests, high biodiversity, and multiple species at risk, this site represents a flagship addition to the Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust’s protected lands.
This 80–120-year-old deciduous forest is home to an estimated 10,000 mature sugar maples and features a rich mosaic of ecosystems – forests, wetlands, rock barrens, and creeks – all in excellent ecological condition. Its biodiversity is remarkable, with an exceptionally lush understory and connections to several hundred acres of adjacent Crown Land.
Eleven species at risk have already been documented here, including Wood Thrush (Threatened), Monarch (Endangered), and Eastern Wood Pewee (Special Concern). Further studies are expected to confirm more.
As the reserve is relatively isolated with no road frontage, there are currently no plans for trails or general public access. The Land Trust may explore opportunities for guided visits in the future, but the immediate focus is on baseline species inventories and ongoing property monitoring, including for invasive species. The site also offers opportunities for university and research partnerships.
